Homemade Soft Pretzels

These homemade pretzels are the perfect sweet or salty snack. Use this recipe for a quick meal, making a soft, fresh pretzel roll, or create a cheap and easy party platter of pretzel nuggets complete with a variety of dips.

Equipment

  • silicone baking mat or nonstick foil

Ingredients

  • 2 T yeast
  • 1 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 5 cups flour
  • pretzel salt
  • 1/4 cup butter

Soda water

  • 2 T baking soda
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  • Dissolve yeast in warm water.
  • Add brown sugar, then mix in flour one cup at a time
  • Knead dough until smooth and elastic (about 4 minutes)
  • Preheat oven to 475 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Measure baking soda and warm water into a small pan. Heat on stove until warm with small bubbles, but not boiling
  • Roll and twist pretzels or shape into nuggets
  • Dip each pretzel in soda water
  • Place on a baking sheet with nonstick foil or silicone baking mat.
  • Sprinkle with pretzel salt as desired
  • Bake 8 minutes or until golden brown
  • Melt 1/4 cup of butter and spread over each pretzel

For Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel

  • Mix 1/4 cup cinnamon and 1 cup sugar
  • After each pretzel has been baked and coated in butter, dip in cinnamon sugar mixture
